There are few things more satisfying than organizing a messy room or closet. And trust me when I tell you that a little bit of organization goes a long way. I love a good organizational system as much as the next type-A Virgo, and have slowly organized most of our home over the last few years. I know organizing isn’t everyone’s favorite thing. If it’s not yours, trust me when I tell you that it is worth the work. Investing in products that will help you organize everything in your home makes it a little more fun, and makes your day-to-day more seamless. I’ve rounded up the best home organization systems for every room in your home, and want to share my favorite home organization tips with you, too.
Home Organization Products That Will Make You Feel Like You Have It Together
We all have a junk drawer (me included) and most of us just try to close the drawer and not think about it. But how would it feel if everything in your home had a place? When you open your linen closet and everything’s a disaster, sure, you’re still fine. But I’m telling you – having an organized home feels good. Like many of you, I have too much stuff. Kitchen cabinets were overstuffed, our cleaning supplies were a mess, and the storage area of our basement was…not good. So I came up with a home storage solution for each room, sold and donated a lot, and organized our entire home. Our organized fridge sparked joy. Then we moved.
Professional organizers are awesome and I love following them on Instagram. Their work is so satisfying to watch, but for most of us, it’s just not in the budget. But thanks to Amazon and The Container Store, it’s easy enough to come up with your own storage system, and to create an organized space in your home. And if you are short on storage space and live in a small space, it will make an even bigger difference. Less clutter, more time.
Staying organized with young kids
Half of my family members are very young and messy and because of the beautiful storage system I’ve implemented, have easy access to small toys. But, we can easily put them away in the few baskets we keep out, so it’s not so bad. Designating a specific area to toys or shoes, or whatever it may be, is so helpful. Giving everything a place and then teaching your kids to put things away is an essential step to staying organized with young kids. If you have kids and they play in common areas, I’d recommend keeping a few baskets out, with toys you are ok giving your kids access to. When things have a designated area, and when there’s less to choose from, it’s easier to keep your home clean.
Getting organized
There is an easy way to ensure you will have a tidy home. And that is to have less stuff. Get rid of the things you don’t need or use. If you don’t love it or use it regularly, it’s time to go. I was ruthless when it came to toys my girls grew out of, and implementing a toy rotation system helped tremendously.
Practice file folding
Folding towels, shirts, and kids pajamas this way allows you to see all the contents of a drawer without having to sift through piles of clothes. I like to color code from light to dark, and separate solids and patterns, too. You know, because it’s fun.
Lidded Baskets:
My favorite beautiful toy storage solution. Baskets are the best way to keep toys organized by type, and to keep toys from invading your entire home. The girls each have one of these in our living room – they keep toys completely hidden.
Floor Basket:
Open toy storage is a great way to keep toys easily accessible. And these baskets are pretty enough to leave out in a family room.
Drawer Organizers:
Compartmentalizing your drawers will change your life. Yes, it takes time (and the strength to get rid of the things you don’t need) to implement this system. But once you do, just wow. There are few things that feel as good as opening a drawer, knowing exactly what’s in there, and being able to spot it right away. You can use drawer organizers everywhere. These are ideal for organizing kitchen utensils and beauty products, too. They keep small items tidy. A must-have for every small kitchen, home office, and bathroom.
Bamboo Drawer Organizer:
I highly recommend that you Marie Kondo your dresser and closet if you haven’t already. I upgraded my plastic dividers to bamboo and my dresser has never looked better.
Lazy Susan:
This is one of the most creative storage solutions for your fridge, bathroom, or even art supplies. I have one of these in our refrigerator for condiments and dressing, and another in my bathroom cabinet for beauty products.
Stand-Up Silicone Bag:
We don’t really use plastic bags – these are large, sturdy, eco, friendly, and great for storing everything from fresh fruit to leftovers.
Plastic Storage Bin:
There are a handful of these storage containers in a large lazy susan cabinet. They make organizing larger areas a little easier. But they’re great for everything – the pantry, toys, bathroom, and even your fridge.
Kuggis Box:
I use these to organize all my kids’ arts supplies. They stack, wipe clean, and are very affordable. Just note the contents with a label maker.
Tea Organizer:
I don’t know that I can call this a must-have, but there’s something peaceful about opening this perfect little box of perfectly organized tea. It might seem gimmicky, but when you know exactly where you tea is and can find the flavor you’re looking for quickly and easily, there is calm in that moment. And I realize how that sounds, but shuffling through a random box of tea isn’t as peaceful as pulling out a tidy box and choosing your flavor. It’s just not.
Entryway Rack:
Again, this was a small house problem that needed to be solved. We didn’t have a mudroom or any sort of real coat closet, so I needed to use some vertical space to store shoes. This shoe rack sits by our back door and holds all our shoes, but would be great for toys, too. It’s great for smaller spaces and holds shoes for our entire family. It made such a huge difference for us.
White Bins:
When we (ok, I) first organized our basement, I had everything in clear bins thinking it would be nice to be able to see the contents. But it looked horrible and cluttered. There were at least 30 of these in my old basement. They’re small, but make organizing items by type easier. I really appreciate how much cleaner they look than clear bins. Just use a label maker to note what’s inside each bin. Easy. And tidy.
Label Maker:
I use this to label my sockerbit and kuggis boxes.
Cable and Power Strip Box:
This is sort of the ultimate I have my shit together organization tool.
Velcro Cable Ties:
These seem like one of those unnecessary, gimmicky things, but they’re not. I love them and use them to organize loose cords or longer cords that are plugged in.
