Beach Essentials: A Packing List for a Perfect Day at the Beach

There’s nothing like a day at the beach. Whether you’re planning a solo trip, a family outing, or a day with friends, the right gear makes all the difference. The key to a great beach day is showing up prepared so you can actually relax. Realizing you forgot something the moment you get there really kills the vibe. This guide covers everything from the absolute non-negotiables to the extras that make a good beach day a great one.
Beach Essentials for a Perfect Day at the Beach
Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, always) is non-negotiable — I recommend checking EWG to make sure yours is safe. You’ll want somewhere to relax, and I prefer a beach chair over a towel, ideally one with shoulder straps for easy transport. A good bag, a cooler or insulated water bottle, and a waterproof pouch for your keys, wallet, and phone round out the basics. The pouch especially — nothing worse than digging through a sandy bag for your phone.
Here are all my beach essentials for a great day.
Beach Gear
If you’re headed to the beach on your own or with one kid, you may be able to skip a wagon. But I love having a place to throw my stuff, and I have three kids, so it’s a must for me.
Seating and Comfort
Sure, you could just bring a blanket or towel, but if I’m relaxing on the beach, I like having a chair. We have these chairs from Sunnylife, and I can’t recommend them enough. They have six adjustable positions, an attached pillow, cupholders, and a cooler bag. And my favorite part? It has straps that turn it into a backpack when it’s folded up.
Summer Shopping List
Sun Protection
Even with sunscreen, you’re going to want to consider some type of shade. Beach umbrellas are great, but I prefer SPF shade since it’s so light and easy to use.
Food & Drinks
No beach trip is complete without some snacks and drinks. Bring a big insulated cooler bag, or a smaller one you can throw in your tote. Pack some drinks, a snackle box, or a picnic lunch.
Fun Beach Essentials
Once the essentials are covered, the fun stuff is what makes a beach day memorable. From sand castle molds and boogie boards for the kids to waterproof cards, a Kindle, and a Bose speaker for the adults.
Swimwear
A good swimsuit can make or break a beach day — and a good hat is non-negotiable. This section covers everything from body-contouring one-pieces and classic Hunza G to kids’ swimwear from Minnow, plus the goggles and water shoes you’ll actually be glad you packed.
