Beach Essentials: A Packing List for a Perfect Day at the Beach

There’s nothing like a day at the beach. Whether you’re planning a solo trip (sounds lovely, doesn’t it?), a family outing, or a beach day day with friends, the right gear can make all the difference. From beach chairs to insulated water bottles, this guide covers all the beach essentials to pack. Think of it less like over-planning and more like setting yourself up for a great day at the beach.
Beach Essentials: A Packing List for a Perfect Day at the Beach
You obviously don’t have to have absolutely everything in this list. But let’s start with the non negotiables. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher, always) is a must, and I recommend checking EWG to make sure your sunscreen is safe. You’re going to want somewhere to relax, and I prefer a beach chair over a towel. Bonus points if the beach chair has shoulder straps to make it easy to transport. You’ll need a bag for your things, and a cooler or insulated water bottle. I really like having a waterproof pouch for my keys, wallet, phone, and other small items so they’ll be easy to find (and stay dry, too).
Many of the items on this list might seem obvious, but a checklist will help you make sure you have all the essentials before you head out the door. Here are my beach essentials for a great day at the beach.
Beach Gear
If you’re headed to the beach on your own or with one kid, you may be able to skip a wagon. But I love having a place to throw my stuff, and I have three kids, so it’s a must for me.
Seating and Comfort
Sure, you could just bring a blanket or towel, but if I’m relaxing on the beach, I like having a chair. We have these chairs from Sunnylife, and I can’t recommend them enough. They have six adjustable positions, an attached pillow, cupholders, and a cooler bag. And my favorite part? It has straps that turn it into a backpack when it’s folded up.

Sun Protection
Even with sunscreen, you’re going to want to consider some type of shade. Beach umbrellas are great, but I prefer SPF shade since it’s so light and easy to use.
Food & Drinks
No beach trip is complete without some snacks and drinks. Bring a big insulated cooler bag, or a smaller one you can throw in your tote. Pack some drinks, a snackle box, or a picnic lunch.
