When the temps warm up and I want to wear shorts and dresses, I am instantly reminded of how pale I am. A few summers ago, I decided to embrace my pale skin, but really like having some subtle color. Spray tans are too expensive and too much work, so I went back to using self tanner. I had started paying closer attention to the ingredients in my beauty products, making the switch to clean skin care products years ago and my self tanner was the last product I switched over. I found the perfect self tanner with Coco & Eve’s Self Tanner.

I’m too pale for a real tan, and douse myself in sunscreen, and sit under umbrellas in the summer months and on vacation. The Shift from St. Tropez to Coco & Eve
I hate to admit this, but I used to occasionally go to a tanning bed in high-school. I was young and stupid, and hope we can all agree our tanning bed days are over. I used to get spray tans for special occasions, but want color all summer (and honestly, all year) long. They are expensive and a lot of upkeep, which I do not have time for as a working mom of three. Inhalation of the spray mist during application can be harmful, so unless you’re getting a “clean” spray tan, it’s just not worth it.

It worked so well and it’s not like I was using it daily.I finally researched my favorite self-tanner on EWG’s website, and it scored a 6, which is fair but not great. My tanner scored high for allergies and immunotoxicity, and low for developmental and reproductive toxicity. I was determined to find something clean.

You can see my right leg after applying tanning mousse compared to my very pale left leg. This really does give me the best tan. It looks natural and is pretty subtle on pale skin tones.

How To Apply Self Tanner
Here’s a step-by-step look at my tanning routine. I usually use this every 5-7 days, and try to use a daily moisturizer in between tans to help the tan last a little longer.
Exfoliate
For best results, it is recommended to exfoliate the skin focusing on dry areas. I am too lazy and don’t have enough time to do this, and have never had any issues. For me, it’s all about making sure I don’t miss any spots which is easy to do.
Shave
Shave any unwanted hair before applying your self-tanner.
Apply
Apply the tan to clean, dry skin, free from any moisturizers. Use the tanning mitt to apply to the front of your body and the back of your legs and arms.
Just put a few pumps of mousse on the applicator and grab the ends with your hands, stretching it back and forth. Applying the mousse in a circular motion helps blend the product seamlessly, avoiding streaks and patches. Use the back tan applicator to evenly reach your back. I usually do this twice and check the results in the mirror. These tools allow you to perfectly tan your entire body. I recommend doing this in front of the mirror, paying attention to your arms and elbows, to make sure you get a streak-free tan.
Wash the mitt and back applicator after you’ve applied your tan. I usually put it in the sink under warm water, and then scrub and squeeze any excess tanning foam after I’ve showered to avoid damaging my tan.
Wait
Let the tan develop for a minimum of 2 hours or overnight for a deeper tan. I usually apply it, put on my favorite kimono robe (I have it in black), and work for two hours before showering.
Shower
Shower in warm water to remove the guide color and pat skin dry with a towel.
Repeat
Repeat every 5-7 days or when needed. Moisturize daily for best results. I apply once a week and try to use body lotion daily. I recommend this one.
