If we are lucky, we’ll get to experience a connection like this with a pet in our lifetime. And I’m not sure why no one talks about how hard it is, or how some even feel shame around their grief, so I’m here to normalize this for all of us.

It’s ok to feel lost. It’s ok to feel completely devastated. It’s ok to feel like a piece of our heart is missing.

Tell me about your soul pet. How long were they with you? What was it like attempting to navigate this life without them by your side?

All pets hold a special place in our hearts, but there’s something about the ones who were with us as we found ourselves.

They watched us grow up, gave us someone to come home to, and loved us through every version of ourselves. They were there through every move, every heartbreak, every quiet night, and somehow, they made it all feel like home.

We watch them grow older as they watch us grow up, and when it’s time to let them go, it feels like we’re saying goodbye to a piece of ourselves, too. They give us all their love for their whole lives, but it’s never enough.

Oh, Buddy. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words what you’ve meant to me. What you’ll always mean to me. 💔

You came into my life when I was 26. We went through a cross-country move, new businesses, late nights, break-ups, and you were with me when I started my family.

I didn’t know anyone when I moved to Chicago. You were my best friend, roommate, and coworker. We lived in 7 apartments, 1 condo, and 2 houses, and home has always been wherever we were, together.

I’ll always remember how your ears perked up and you would spin left when I offered you chicken. How you rubbed your face into the carpet and ran down the halls at our condo. The little dance you did when I asked if you wanted to get in the bed at night. The way you crossed your paws like a gentleman. I loved coming home to the entire roll of toilet paper all over my apartment (zero sarcasm—I was always so impressed). How you snarled at Conor the second you could sense that I was pregnant and spent the rest of my pregnancy trying to protect me and your baby.

You told me it was time (I’ll share more when I’m ready) and I feel such a sense of relief that you could spend your last moments at home. I thanked you for everything a million times today. We snuggled, and I told you it was ok. It was time.

The loss feels tremendous. There’s a Buddy size hole in my heart, and as heartbroken as I am, I feel so grateful that I was yours and you were mine. You came into my life when I didn’t have anyone, and left me with a family.

Thank you for everything, my sweet little rescue boy. I’ll hold you in my heart forever.
