What do you do when you feel stuck in life–with work, dating, and everything? Do you have any tips for getting out of rut? I do. We’ve all been there, and it’s when things feel hard that we’re more open to change. Here’s what to do when you’re stuck in a rut.

What to do When You’re Stuck in a Rut

Get your health on track

It’s so easy to skip working out and dive into a pint of ice cream when you’re feeling stuck. And some days call for ice cream (and french fries), but making healthy choices can do wonders for your mood. Drag yourself out of the house to get in your favorite workout or try something new. Then head to the grocery store to stock up on healthy favorites, and try a new recipe.

Have some fun

The best way to stop feeling stuck is to change your routine. Learn a new language or instrument, plan a trip, join a start a book club, get your nails done, or enjoy a movie night and DIY facial. Treat yourself to something that will make you happy.

Gain a new perspective

There are times we forget why we do what we do, so if you’re stuck in a work, blog, or life rut, look at the big picture and think about the project or area of your life that you’re in. Are you working toward something? Following a dream? Are you not where you want to be? Then figure out a step to get you where you want to go.

When I was in my 20s and living at home, stuck in a bad relationship, and generally unhappy, I had to force myself to remember that this was just one not so great part of my life, and that it wouldn’t last forever. To get through it, I told myself (this gives me chills now) that one day, I’d be able to help one of my kid’s friends if they were struggling and didn’t have supportive parents. Knowing I would be able to use what I went through to help one person would make it worth it, and almost a decade later, I’ve been able to share my story with all of you.

Organize your home

Maybe it’s just me, but this always gets me in a better mood. Organize your kitchen, rearrange furniture, capsule your closet, and donate anything you don’t need or use.

Take a day off

You might be working too much and too hard, so it’s time for a break. Take a day off work (and from your inbox) and give yourself a 3 day weekend. Relax, do something fun, and let yourself recharge. I left Memorial Day Weekend feeling like a new woman.
